What is computer vision syndrome?

On a typical day, we are on a device a ton. We use computers for work, tablets to check the news, TVs to relax, and of course, smartphones to text. We can spend up to 10 hours a day staring at a screen. However, our bodies weren’t designed to have this much screen time throughout the day. Our Oak Lawn office is starting to see more and more patients complaining of dry eyes and other eye strains related to computer use. The research shows that as much as 90% of people working at a computer screen have these issues. It is affecting most of us.

What are the symptoms?

The strain on your eyes from computer vision syndrome doesn’t appear to cause long term damage. However, there is temporary strain that will cause discomfort. Things you will start to feel:

  • Redness
  • Itchiness
  • Dry eyes
  • Tearing
  • Headaches
  • Iritation

What can be done for Computer Vision Syndrome?

  1. Try removing glare on the screen. Consider installing a dimmer switch.
  2. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, stare at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. Your eyes need a break and need to relax. Staring at the screen for a long time puts a strain on them. We even have to actively remember to blink. When staring at screens we tend to blink less so set a reminder to blink.
  3. Consider where your desk is in relation to your computer and chair. You shouldn’t have to strain your neck when staring at the screen.
